THE BEAT BOYS
The Dominoes: The Blues Set: The Illusions
Leigh

Kenny Fillingham: Lead guitar. Ronnie Simms: Drums
Alan 'Parky' Parkinson: Lead Vocal.
Ronnie Carr: Bass Guitar: Malc' Grundy: Lead Guitar.

Originally The Beat Boys started out as The Dominoes skiffle group in 1957- 1958. By late 1958 we were organised
quite well and used to go down the Bodega in Cross St to watch Paul Beattie - he was really top man at the time,
together with Karl Denver.

**Johnny Goode stands at the rear in the middle: See below..
Paul got us our first gig at The Bodega and also the El-Rio in Macclesfield, which helped us a lot and things took off
and we changed our style to a more rocky type music. As The Beat Boys, we used to play in and around Manchester,
mostly at The Twisted Wheel, St Bernadettes, Ritz and The Plaza. Jack Abadi from The Wheel took us under his wing
and we travelled all over the place and enjoyed some wonderful moments.
The highlights being many TV appearances, accompanying Gene Vincent, Memphis Slim, Screaming Jay Hawkins
and a few more on their tours of England. We recorded with Decca and enjoyed great times from 1960-1965, when
we decided to do our own thing.
We all remain good friends and keep in touch by doing re-unions, and have raised large sums of money for charity.

"As you know. I bought Kenny Fillingham's Antoria LG50 Guitar as my first guitar. I was looking at some Lanky Beat pics,
and it would seem that Kenny had at different times, possessed TWO of them. Mine had dot-neck-markers as in the first
Beat Boys and in the Vince Taylor pics. So that's the one I bought from him.
In The Plaza Manchester 1960 pic - above, Kennys Antroria has block-markers on the neck, so he must have used two
different Antorias in a very short time. Why? The mystery deepens..

They also played with Marty Wilde & The Wild Cats at Wigan Emp' in 1963.

THE ILLUSIONS
"One-time resident group ay The Sportsmans Club in Wigan was The Illusions featuring Eddie Barker and your friend and mine Ronnie Carr of The Beat Boys. They did some tremenous stuff. Ronnie actually played organ and sang, sheer class. The organ was a Hammond L100 and the sound was outstanding." Mitch Mitchinson: March 2010

Charity Show..

Friday 18 Feb 2011

'The Redundant Rockers'
'Bop till you drop.' it said on the ticket - and these six guys made sure 'you got what it said on tin' and they did just that..
A fully sold-out variety show produced a great night of nostalgia for a packed-out club which had a superb line-up of talent to entertain them for the evening. At the same time, the audience dug deep into their pockets and purses to raise a cool £3220 for these most deserving of charities.
Live music from the band went down a special treat as the one-hour spot produced some of the most famous rock 'n roll classic songs of all time. Three original Beat Boys- Ronnie Carr: Bass, Alan Parkinson: Vocal-Harmonica and George Twist: Keyboards - were joined on stage byAlan Gilligan: Rhythm Guitar of The Bluenotes,Bill Hart: Drummer of The Shyms-Tynfoiland Keith Wright: Lead Guitarist of The Sportsmen.

The Redundent Rockers song list..
Collectively the band can call on well over 250 years of rock 'n roll experience between them.. and 'oh-boy..' did it show. The floor was packed with boppers and rockers of all ages who recreated these wonderful bygone times as though they were just yesterday. 'More - more - more' the audience yelled and the band of course duly obliged.
All eventually went home saying, 'what a fab time they'd had.' I guess that says it all - and that's how it should be..

The Beat Boys NOT at the Cavern
"This was done at my 60th birthday party in 2000. My mate in Norway has been playing about with the film and put
all that Cavern bit on later. He is having a joke with me I think but it shows what can be done if you put your mind
to it and Chris wasn't even there. UKFM; that’s what his company is called. But it was not filmed in the Cavern."

*A BEAT BOYS REUNION

"Kenny Fillingham, Ronnie Carr and Malcolm Grundy with George Twist on organ and Baz Houghton on drums at Westhoughton LC in the early 1990s.
Mayor Twist..
George Twist was the Mayor of Westhoughton at the time and the gig was held as a fund-raiser the Lord Mayor's charity. It was the final fundraising show for the Mayor's appeal, so we couldn't refuse that so we played him on with the 'His Worship - The Mayor' in full ceremonial regalia"

JOHNNY GOODE
aka Tony Allen: IF: The Beat Boys: Dominoes & ROGUE
Leigh
*Tony Allen: Triple Cross - & 'IF'.. see below

An original and former Beat Boy;
Ronnie Carr claimed that Johnny Goode's stage-act out-classed
the like's of his better known contemporaries of the time.
TONY ALLEN
aka Johnny Goode

"Johnny Goode started with The Dominoes in Leigh and then continued with The Beat Boys until he signed up with Larry Parnes who had Billy Fury - Marty Wilde - Joe Brown on his books.
Parnes sent him on tour with them all as you can see from the poster at Bradford under the name of Johnny Goode. Believe me, he was a knock-out. How he didn't make it with Larry Parnes, I do not know? Later on he left the Parnes stable and signed up with Philips Records Company and got new managment and a new name as Tony Allen. He recorded quite a few songs with them. Then he went back to the band's as lead vocal with the rock-blues-jazz outfit 'IF'. This was great band which toured the USA a couple of times and all of Europe as well.
He then had some time with Rogue - a very good, really close harmony outfit. From there he had a short spell with Ashton-Gardner & Dykes. Retired from the business now - but I don't think for too long."
Ronnie Carr: October 2010

*TRIPLE CROSS
Theme Tune by Tony Allen

The CD cover - front and back - of Tony Allen's song which
was the theme tune from the film Triple Cross.

Released in France and Europe only and not the UK it was premiered in Paris in 1966.
Tony Allen attended the 'do' - a splendid occasion - he fondly recalls.
*
"Tony Allen - centre pic - when he toured the U S with the band 'IF' in the early sixties.
Great blues-jazz band. I think he went there three times?"

RONNIE & CLIVE

Ronnie Carr of the The Beat Boys with life long pal Clive Powell -
who is perhaps better known as Georgie Fame.
"Together with a distracted June Carr, Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames played live when he was guest band on the Motown Show Tour in 1965 -1966. Here at rehearsals at the Odeon, Manchester, we met the full show parade: Smokie Robinson & The Miracles - Dianna Ross & The Supremes -Martha & The Vandellas and Stevie Wonder; and the whole squad. Now that was a night to remember. This was the tour which was poorly attended as they were not very well known then. Absolutely brilliant. I'm So glad that they all went on to the stardom they deserved."

Parky: Swings The Blues
Alan Parkinson

"One of Alan Parkinson's many musical manifestations over the last fifty years is this more recent CD, Parky - Swinging the Blues. Based on a driving passion for a 1950's Big Band swing era, here he captures just that. With songs like Mack The Knife, Born Free and Misty he still has the musical magic which has made him a popular figure all those years ago. Here is something special to add to that golden treasure chest collection."
