BLACK JUMBO

'Black Jumbo'
A water colour by Christine Hart

In April 2010 I held a special art exhibition at The Beatles Story in Liverpool to celebrate
and commemorate 50 Years of Mersey Sound. I named it the Mersey Sound Wave
Guitars in artwork or guitars making an artistic statement is something we don't see too much of but I am given of the opinion that is a fast changing assumption. The guitar can often be a masterpiece of art within itself. Alternatively several and considerable numbers of guitars placed together or combined in some way can lead to many interesting aestheticforms.
Even if no decernable personal interest is shown in any said instrument, what become's immediately apparent, is that a most noteable emotional reaction occurs when a juxtapostion of the familiar form meets the display thereof in unfamiliar collective form.. Simply put - here is the unexpected and with it comes the !wow! factor. |
MERSEY SOUND WAVE
The Mersey Sound Wave was such. Given that over 100 guitars suspended from the ceiling above produced the form of gently flowing river Mersey wave.

This artistic installation was my personal way in paying tribute to Mersey Sound: 50 Years on. Inspired by the MSW and from it came several off-shoot project's. These are shown below..

'Spare' acoustic guitars made a fitting finish to the tail-end piece
of the Mersey Sound Wave sculpture.

SUNSET ON THE WAVE
By John State
Inspired by the concept of the Mersey Sound Wave John State put in many hours of creative endeavour to produce an amazing piece of complimentary artwork to go on display with the MSW at The Beatles Story Fab4 Store, Liverpool in April 2010.

Two solid guitar bodies are joined together with seven guitars necks to make a surmised sunset. Placed appropriately in the position of the setting sun over Liverpool Bay the sculpture makes its impact as the sun setting on the distant horizon.

John State relaxes with one of his many other guitars.

*SPIRIT OF THE WAVE
By Ken Shalliker

Ken Shalliker, Bill Hart and the shape of things to come..
Ken Shalliker - one-time bass player with liverpool legends Kingsize Taylor & The Dominoes brought to my attention a great idea. He would personally design and build an extraordinarily special bass guitar for the Mersey Sound Wave art installation; coincidently naming the dream instrument the 'Spirit of The Wave.
In all its glory..
The finished product is featured below.

'Spirit' in the sky..
Ken's superb creation is suspended high above the other 100+ guitar's, adding a
wonderful striking feature to Bill Hart's fascinating art installation.

Ken plays the 'Spirit of The Wave' in the recording studio.
Together with Bill's Band Something Catchy, the reformed 2010 Dominoes recorded Ken's
specially written instrumental track'Mersey Thunder' for the new Mersey Sound Wave CD.
