THE EXPRESSION NEW AVALONS
The Avalons classic line-up of Dave, Mike, Roy, Les, and Ray survived until mid-1965 when Ray and Les left the group. Roy Tems replaced Les on bass guitar and rather than get another rhythm guitarist Paul Arrowsmith joined us on Vox organ. With Dave on vocals, Roy on drums, and Mike on guitar, this was The New Avalons.
Dave then gave notice he was moving to the south coast - he joined a C&W group, Western Express - so we recruited a new singer, Frank Bamford.Dave and Frank Bamford performed together briefly during a transitional period as we learned new songs to suit Frank’s jazzier style.
Ray Charles, Georgie Fame & Mose Allison songs featured strongly plus organ based instrumentals. Frank then quit the band in 1966 and we decided The Avalons reign was over.
I formed a new group called The Expression, a name I thought reflected Motown groups of the time. The Expression comprised Alan Gratton on vocals, Roy Shoesmith on drums, Ray Tems on bass guitar and Paul Arrowsmith on Vox organ. We played a mix of Motown and soul.
We were influenced by Mod tastes - as you can see from photos SEE PHOTOS OF MIKE, ROY AND ALAN - plus Paul’s keyboard.
This group was a short-lived one - See newspaper story dated 3/6/66.
Roy Shoesmith joined The Kudos, Paul Arrowsmith briefly joined
The Blackjacks - which became The Devils Disciples - before joining
The Mutineers. Mike joined the Devils’ Disciples which became
The Uptown Go-Go Band.
